About Nancy Beams

Nancy’s etchings are a personal journey through loss and the emotional recovery. She is best known for her sunflower prints used as a metaphor to express these struggles, joys and hopes. The sunflower in its magnificent variety of growth and decay has continued to influence her. It reflects the pain, acceptance and empathy of changing and the continual process of becoming emotionally present.
Primarily using the aquatint technique of copper plate etching, Nancy draws out strong feelings with a limited palette. At the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Nancy honed the lessons of mark making, the importance of form and shape in a composition, and the use of value and tone for the subtleties and emphasis they created. Etching has suited these skills for her art making and for the message she creates.
