Gallery Manager

Position Overview

The Old Sculpin Gallery, home of the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association, is seeking an enthusiastic and industrious individual as Gallery Manager for the 2025 season.

The Old Sculpin Gallery, the first art gallery on Martha’s Vineyard, is located in the historic landmark building which was once the workshop of beloved boat builder, Manuel Swartz. Situated across from the Chappy Ferry, the gallery is at home on Dock Street, on the waterfront of Edgartown.

While steeped in tradition, the Old Sculpin Gallery fosters the work of its 60 member artists of many genres, promoting fresh exhibits on a weekly basis and highlighting themed exhibits and events that reflect our uniquely dynamic island life. In 2019, we were awarded the distinction of Best Professional Association on the island. We seek a candidate who sees their role as going beyond the day to day operation of the gallery and is willing to accept the many challenges that come with overseeing a very exciting and ever-changing calendar of shows and events.

The ideal candidate would be responsible for daily operations of the gallery which, first and foremost, would include interacting with our guest visitors and patrons through excellent interpersonal and exceptional communication skills.  The individual would be expected to provide pertinent information about each of the member artists and their work for the purpose of driving gallery sales. The individual should be able to manage our database of sales records and inventory, update the website, manage social media postings and weekly print advertising.

The candidate will be expected to work closely with member artists to help coordinate their weekly exhibits and artist receptions. The individual will also provide monthly reports to the Board of Directors, presenting an in-person report and support to board members in their respective roles. The seasonal, full-time employment includes overseeing the opening and closing of the gallery at the beginning and close of the season, which runs from Memorial weekend and concludes Columbus Day weekend.

This is a tremendous opportunity to be a vital part of a spirited and supportive non-profit arts organization.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Housing for the 2025 Season.

  • Business, management & retail experience are required. Art experience a plus.

  • Attention to detail and flexibility to work with different personalities in a fast-paced environment. Ability to collaborate well with a good sense of humor and positive attitude while also maintaining the professional atmosphere.

  • Experience in customer service is required as you will be the face of the gallery and greeting guests, patrons, board members, and community partners.

  • Particular preference will be given to individuals with retail experience as well as familiarity with non-profits.

  • Knowledge of or time spent on Martha’s Vineyard is not required but is highly encouraged due to the particularities of the summer season in Edgartown and the familiarity needed for the individual hired to have their own lodging and transportation.
